A trailing / climbing vine like shrub from the Piperaceae family, native to Southern India. It can reach a height of eight metres, the flowers are whitish, perfect, and arranged on elongated spikes. The fruit is globular drupe of red colour when ripe. A vine has to be between six and seven years old before a crop can be harvested.
