Green illite-type clay with a phyllitic structure (clay fraction 60% à 80%), it is one of the main minerals in the clay group. It is almost ubiquitous in clay formations. It is found in finely lamellar masses, smooth to greasy to the touch and generally mixed with kaolinite and other minerals.

Formula : (K,H3O)Al2(Si3Al)O10(H2O,OH)2

Illite: 65% to 75% Kaolinite: 5% to 15% Smectite: 5% to 10%

6. Absence of irritating power

Laboratory EVIC CEBA
Study ref. Ib 222/0432-0433 of October 1995
Clinical verification of skin tolerance of the green illite clay paste.
10 female volunteers aged between 20 and 43 years old.
7.5g of the clay paste was applied as a face mask in such a way as to form a layer about 1cm thick. After 15 minutes of contact, the paste was washed off with plenty of water. The application was repeated once a week for two weeks running.

Conclusion
The skin tolerance of the green illite clay paste proved good during this clinical trial as a face mask.
Two volunteers experienced a slight erythematous reaction that was limited and temporary and considered as completely normal and expected (occlusion of pores and not skin intolerance).

7. Adsorption of skin bacteria with the application of clay
Microbiological Research Institute (COFRAC-accredited)
Report no. 350/0192 of March and June 1992

Product: Superfine green illite clay paste. The study was conducted with 20 subjects who did not present any skin lesion and did not use any antibacterial substance.
WILLIAMSON and KLIGMANN method modified by FLEURETTE and TRANSY:
Rubbing the skin of the inner forearm using a rubber pallet for 15 seconds to collect the skin microorganisms. A control area and a test area are marked out. Test area: cataplasm of clay of 0.3g .cm-2 for 10 minutes.

Conclusion
The average number of skin microflora counted on the subjects is 148 bacteria.cm-2 on the inner forearm. After applying a cataplasm of clay, this average falls to 33 bacteria.
The application of a clay paste to the skin and then its removal once dry leads to a 77% reduction in the number of skin bacteria.

8. Determination of the bacteria adsorption power on green illite clay
Microbiological Research Institute (COFRAC-accredited)
IRM test report no. 234/0491.1, April May 1991
Determination of the bacteria adsorption power on successive additions of clay in water: in a 500ml suspension of bacteria (streptocoque faecalis) 25g of superfine green clay is added (5%). After sedimentation for one hour, the number of bacteria is counted in the supernatant. This operation is repeated every hour for 8 hours.

Conclusion
On average, each clay addition (5% en masse) in the water reduces the bacterial contamination by around 10% (over 8 hours, there is a 78 to 88% reduction).

9. Determination of the bacteria retention power of clay
Microbiological Research Institute (COFRAC-accredited)
IRM test report no. 219/0391. 1 March 1991
Product: green illite clay in suspension.
Bacterial strains: E coli, streptococcus faecalis, staphylococcus aureus
Usage dose: 25g for 500ml of water, or 5% m/v
Sedimentation time: 1 hour 30

Conclusion
The bacteria of the clay-water suspension (108 par ml) adsorb on the clay in a significant proportion, and therefore the initial contamination is greatly reduced in the supernatant (from 87.3% to 99.7%).

10. Determination of the bacterial and fungi adsorption power on additions of clay in suspension.
Microbiological Research Institute (COFRAC-accredited)
IRM test report no. 350/0192. A, March June 1992

Determination of the adsorption power of 4 bacteria and 3 fungi on successive additions of green illite clay in water (8 additions of 25g in 500ml of water over 8 hours).
Adsorption is generally greater for microorganisms who cause food poisoning (Listeria, Yersinia, Salmonella) and for Candida, Aspergillus, Penicillium, from 54% to 99% according to the species tested.

General conclusion
Applied onto the skin or used suspended in water, its adsorption capacity of microorganisms is remarkable: 77% after 10 minutes on the skin up to 99.7% in suspension, according to the microbic species.
Numerous fungi and bacteria which may be pathogenic are therefore eliminated either from the surface of the skin or from the digestive tract after each use
